Kummerspeck #NewNormal #A2Z

 Kummerspeck

(German)

Excess weight gained from emotional overeating. Literally "grief bacon."

Some of us have the privileges

so many that we lose count

and we fail to identify

often when and how

A privilege

becomes a cage

Food not for survival

but food to satiate this rage

this sadness

The hopelessness of this plague

What is on your plate?

Is it just food?

or an opiate.

  1. So true! Many times we forget to count our blessings and just crib about things not available to us. Loved the line, a privilege becomes a cage!

  2. Wow!
    That last line hits hard.

The fact that this German word sounds like waist in Hindi (kummer) made me smile. The warning is in the word.

  4. Excellent poem! And I love the “stressed is desserts spelled backwards” image. So true, as we reach for the sugary foods. https://mollyscanopy.com/2021/04/kents-and-the-creek-i-learn-to-smoke-atozchallenge/

  7. In Weight Watchers (I've been on their program for almost nine years) we learn a lot about emotional eating and stress eating. We do tend to self-medicate with food. But it solves nothing.

  10. Interesting to know this German word that seems to have some links with Hindi. Also with Cummerband.
