The Lonely Woman's Poem

The loneliness epidemic
takes its toll
trapped in a utopia
called happily ever after
there is no today

the tea is stale
the books, the words
the lists, the voices
all stink
of uselessness

Someone's says-
"Blessing is..."
and I think of
the could have beens
the books I never wrote
the child I almost had
the dreams I postponed

Now this is an elaborate
funeral ceremony
I bury myself
molecule by molecule
till you will one day
write obituaries

and know how much
my loneliness weighed.

Emily & Emily

across two continents
two lonely women
trying to make sense
of this hostile world

through pseudonyms and anonymity
were born their classics

posthumous love
is just a consolation prize.

Without you (in the memory of my late father)

W

Blogging from A to Z Challenge [April 2015]

The air I breathe is heavy
the colours dull
the food bland
the words meaningless

days just endless motions

of the hands of a clock

I am not myself

the world is not the same

without you.

Signature (in the memory of my late father)

I remember how in school
friends would pity me
because your craggy signatures
were impossible to forge
on a bad class test

I remember  how disappointed
you were when I first signed
for my first ever bank account

"no style at all !"

you had teased me all day long

Thousands of signatures later
yours and mine
I now remember only two
your last one on your cheque book
and my shaky one
in the crematorium record book

I hold your pen often

and try to feel

the last warmth of your fingers

on its cold steel

I sign my name

a hundred times for you.

Q & A (in the memory of my late father)

Q

Blogging from A to Z Challenge [April 2015]

Did you think of me one last time?
Was the going away painful?
Am I doing fine without you?
Are you fine now?
Will this emptiness ever go away?
Is there actually a hereafter?

Will you always remember me?
Will we ever meet again?

The necromancer promises
Me all the answers
I prefer your memories.

Letting Go (in the memory of my late father)

Blogging from A to Z Challenge [April 2015]

Every passing moment
is an act of letting go
yet the human heart
is made of absorbent clay and so

it holds back
a moment, a fragrance
a look or a word
though

even in the pain
of saying final adieu
and letting a loved one go

we are rehearsing
our own going
in the incessant
cosmic flow.

Idiosyncrasies (in the memory of my late father)

 I

Out of the thousands of things
a child knows a parent by
a prominent one
is the idiosyncrasies

the knack of storing
newspaper cuttings
older than me

the fountain pen
the Chelpark Dark Blue Inkpot
and the calligraphic writing

the carbon sheet
for a duplicate copy
of every handwritten sheet
the radio news
thrice a day
with strong tea

the phone diaries
of every shape and size

the neatly arranged
shaving supplies

coins of every denomination
in small jars
by the bedside

only cardigans
no pullovers
only blazers
no jackets

ironed and folded
hankies all whites

a no stubble look
a six decades old hairstyle

there were no headlines
80 years old, father of a girl, died

but a million idiosyncrasies
that were only his
some I inherited
some died.

Feet of Clay - (in the memory of my late father)

F

Blogging from A to Z Challenge [April 2015]

Had long ago read a poem
about Ozymandias
"Two vast and trunkless legs of stone
Stand in the desert. . . . Near them, on the sand,
Half sunk a shattered visage lies..."*

As I grew year by year
The halos of my parents
did gradually disappear

I now saw them whole
as humans with their flaws
their feet of clay**
and all the faux pas

Now as a parent
I have to come to terms
with life's full cycle
when my little one
turns around

and sees me
as a regular woman
who has her flaws and
is less divine more human

I forgive you Papa
as you had once said
- "because none of us is perfect
what matters
where we are
we give it our best."

* Lines from the poem OZYMANDIAS by Shelley
**Feet of clay is a reference to the interpretation of the dream of Nebuchadnezzar, King of Babylon, by the prophet Daniel as recounted in the Book of Daniel. The analogy is now commonly used to refer to a weakness or character flaw, especially in people of prominence

Death Certificate - in the memory of my late father

D

A piece of paper
to make me believe
it wasn't a bad dream
the pyre, the cremation
are fears my overactive mind
replayed

a disinterested old man's
blank stare
from behind the piles
of files
thousands of deaths
stocked as papers
as legal statistics

no record
of the empty beds
unused creams, toothpastes
specs through which
his eyes saw the world
his rosary wrapped on my wrist
to feel his rough, old fingertips
to hear him murmur
his sacred chant

questions unanswered
I love yous
whys ,unsaid
a 22 second sound recording
a blurry video
of him having his evening chai
in an inexpensive mobile

a death certificate
for a date and a time
none for the years
and moments
gone forever.

Aide-memoire ( in the memory of my late father)

A

from the cold,hard
deathbed in a hospital
he uttered a monosyllable
into the phone
I knew it was
the last fragment
of his voice for me.
*********************************
No I was not
hoping against hope
as the kilometres lessened
I knew the distance
between papa and me
had extended
to a fixed forever
that would never change
**********************************
The sunset that day
was special
he had not waited
long enough for it
and it was the first
of the many for me
without him
breathing
***********************************
I walked in
he lay there
a corpse for the world
for me my dad still
I was thinking about
was mom's medicine
and phone calls to be made
***********************************
I didn't stop my tears
there weren't any
I was aware he was gone
but all I felt
was a deep hollow
inside me
emptiness and calm
************************************
His body was being bathed
ritual after ritual
tie the toes
fold the hands
the smile gone
the eyes closed
I ran my fingers through his hair
one last time
I am sure he liked it
so did I
************************************
My child touched his forehead
kissed his cheek
she had been told
he will always love her
I know she will
always know
Karmic connections
************************************
the van was shaky
I had put my hand on his chest
the chanting
was the only rhythm
my heart was
as still as his.
*************************************
He was placed on the pyre
He had once told me
about the five elements
I knew what I had to do
fire was the final test.
*************************************
Most people had left
two more pyres were afire
I kept looking at the flames
long and close enough
to feel the ash
on my skin
in my breath
peace, peace, peace
I knew much later
I was chanting.
**************************************
The beauty of the moment
of letting go
is the clarity
about who I am
and what I want
***************************************
I had read somewhere
nothing ever goes away
until it has taught us
what we need to know
I washed a few pieces of bone
and put them in a pot
I learnt the meaning of life
************************************
thunder and lightening
a journey within a journey
darkness and flickers of light
every one travelling
none of them know
*************************************
all that remained
of his eight decades
was a mud pot
and a handful of remains
I was not listening to the priest
the stairs on the Ghat were cold
with my freezing hands
inside the water
He and I touched freedom
************************************
The house was the same
the world wasn't
I lay in his bed
I packed his medicines
touched his papers
his clothes
life had to go on
I kept asking why
***********************************
Yes I was smiling
laughing aloud
because he liked me that way
and I wanted him
to know
I was fine
***********************************
some fond memory
and mummy would smile
for a few seconds
before she broke down again
he knew I was trying
***********************************
rituals, visitors
cheque books, bills
lawyers, offices
papers, decisions
only in the pauses
I closed my eyes
and we met
************************************
finally me and mom
alone
nothing to tell each other
she made me some tea
I combed her hair
************************************
my little one plays
stone-paper-scissor
a death is a litmus test
so many real faces revealed
*************************************
grief is a long lonely road
I look for Rumi, Buddha
they were right
the wound is where
the light enters
the journey is
actually the destination
*************************************
one journey has ended
another lonely one continues
in a sacred fire
all my fears melted
memories cling
like a fragrance
now I know
everything is temporary
so why worry
***************************************

Chanting across cities

His breath is shallow
noisy,interrupted
the crevices in the skin
deeper than ever

a long lifetime
and the silent
giving up of it all

I can hear
across cities
when it comes to dad

I take down
Tuesdays with Morrie
from the book shelf

“Death ends a life,
not a relationship.”

The distance between
our two cities
is longer than ever

yet I'm right outside
his door
as frozen as the snow
falling quietly
his rosary in my hand
chanting nothing.

Pregnant with a million Haikus

A lone letter box stands with a rusty lock hanging on it. I think of all the dead letters inside it. Five decades more if it survives the ever expanding roads and rails and empty hearts it will become an antique - precious and useless.

Met a friend after one and a half decade on social media yesterday( as much as meeting is possible there.) She has the same smile, same radiant eyes. What is a virtue in life, I wonder? Somethings remaining unchanged and somethings constantly changing and knowing the difference.

The river flows

to a point of

no return

and comes back

as snow

What is the purpose of the silent alphabets in English words ?, the little one asks. I can't give her a linguistic answer so I buy some time and wonder what is the purpose of silent words in conversations?

Why is complexity fashionable and simplicity plain simple?

Old love letters in a closet

are they complex or simple

psychological assessments
medical alignments
mental confinements

I am pregnant
with a million haikus
only if
Hemingway's angst
would stop
drowning me.

OASIS

I scrub the lines on my forehead
on the Sufi's threshold
the lines of my palm burn
on the marble floor
destiny flows out

Rumi, Hafiz stand by
love is an inscription
embossed on a skin
by a pair of lips

like day and night
it grows, wanes,changes
never ceases
sometimes a wound
sometimes a weapon

I am weary of
this beating in the chest
Can the dead stop pretending to be alive?

you have knit all the wisdom
about women and men
about love and loss
in your words
my questions roam in your anecdotes
looking for an answer

"ISHQ" travels miles and miles
of my arteries and veins
to reach nowhere

and sometimes peeps out from
the corner of my eye
to blur my vision of the world

I am a sand dune
make,unmake
scatter, collect
I once loved an oasis.

GRAVES, MYSTICS AND POETS

The fuchsia queen
of some erstwhile carom board
abandoned on a sidewalk
forlorn
waiting anxiously
for a befitting
royal burial

alone
by a busy city road
which cares
for neither life
nor death

in the footsteps
of the Great Mughals
or the corridors
of the empire
in which the sun never set

thousands of souls
that are lonely together
trying to fill
that same blank
with books,lust
power

the Sufis and the poets
the revolutionaries
and the mystics

square pegs
in round holes
misfits all
hiding their rough edges

looking for
the perfect other
to fit in
to smoothen out

stories not
worthy of
any telling
live and die

phoenix-like
the myth of the city
feeds on people
and lives on

how many graves
I walk on each day.

Nothing

no froth
no bubbles
from the stagnant
waters of the mind
emerges
nothingness

answers
expectations
explanations
closures
nothing

soulmates
strangers
Fasks-Maces
masks-faces
holier than thou
hypocrites
nothing

"We can know only that we know nothing. And that is the highest degree of human wisdom.”
―     Leo Tolstoy WAR AND PEACE

Death

Its pouring
amidst the white sea of mourners
grief pulsates

death's favourite game
fill in the blank
with an appropriate word

they are right
nothing stops
sunrises, sets
smiles,tears
life....

but only one word
fills one blank
none other ever does
ever will

yeh kahani....from a shocking news story

http://www.indianexpress.com/news/noida-trauma-one-of-the-starving-sisters-dead-probe-ordered/775595/
