THE CLOSET

Featured post on IndiBlogger, the biggest community of Indian Bloggers

Tentative fingers dive

into the layers

entangled layers rather

of years together

This smooth cleavage-like

silk scarf from Brugge

A coarse cotton

hand-loom in Bhutan

hairy, sweaty

pulsating time

the pairs of watches

never worn together

never torn apart

heartbeat?

and I tug and pull out

the soul beneath flesh

smoke grey

my favorite one

from Istanbul

and it all tumbles out

as tears, memories

bruises and scars

I am a drowning closet

spilled on a cold floor.

Facts

the solace about life is
it isn't endless
like time

the grace about love is
it dies without a trace
like a dream

the irony about pain is
it traps you in a circle
but has no shape

the dichotomy about words is
their meanings are fluid
like existence

Nirvanas in a Red light District

“I'm not a body with a soul, I'm a soul that has a visible part called the body.”

― Paulo CoelhoEleven Minutes

Somewhere in a defamed street
behind the neon lights
 De Wallen- the walls
amidst eyes and bodies
I looked for souls
the wounds of the heart
that we try to patch
with moments
of flesh

Window displays
of bodies
and copulation
fantasy extended
beyond fanatasy
the voyeurs see mirrors

I see myself
clearly as a woman
and suddenly know
that the hands which
will hold me together
and the hands
that will grope
me violently
will often be the same

Life like a
LIVE sex show
pre-paid
no returns guaranteed
pleasure is subjective
Desire is a cigarette burning fast

Right there along with
the rosse buurt
in the Zeedijk
a Buddhist temple

incense & prayer flags
and brief Nirvanas
I felt best
scattered in a
red light district !

Wound

he examines the burn
only the visible
severity of a pain

gentle dressing
is not life's choice
for me

with a scalpel
without anesthesia
life opens
the wounds

and forgets
the sutures later on !

Candy Shop

standing outside
life's candy shop
I count my pennies

the shiny price tags
all beyond me
peace, love, success
in their shiny jars

like nasty kids
sticking out their tongues
they silently smirk and
say L-O-S-E-R

I can't surely afford
what I want
and would never want
what my pennies can buy

so I turn around
and throw the pennies
above my head
making a wish

that some other kid
might pick them up
and have her dream
fulfilled !

Eleutheromania

Guns and roses
remember the cassettes
redundant now
like first love

flakes of snow
on closed eyelids
memories melt
courtesies go

like logs flowing down
mountainous river
with bruises of time
years flow

delirium isn't a word
detachment is a challenge
when soul is a shrine
and chants just one name
like a stuck lego

my body is a
life sentence
do you know?

fresh diagnosis:
Eleutheromania
the patient must celebrate
this Valentine's day
as a final let go !

Confession of a Liar

#KazuoIshiguro

Time is itself trapped
in hours and minutes
seconds are lost firsts

the faces trapped
in the images
now even eyes lie
souls are on sale

wounds with no cure
become habits
and push the breath
in and out of my lungs

this life sentence
 house arrest in my body
I am lying when I say
'Never let me go'
Today I confess
I'm alive, is a lie.

in a sand clock......

trapped in a sand clock
called love
they filled each other
turn by turn
only one could be full
at one time

the other effortlessly
emptying soul
to measure life

when time died
she took him along
like a corpse in a coffin
and let him go like last breath

Snakes & Ladders

All games have morals; and the game of Snakes and Ladders captures, as no other activity can hope to do, the eternal truth that for every ladder you hope to climb, a snake is waiting just around the corner, and for every snake a ladder will compensate.
- Salman Rushdie

Life on a board
years neatly sorted
in square colorful blocks

Destiny is a dice
rolls at random
the minimum sometimes
saves a life
the maximum
death in disguise

two players start
a cordial game
win or loss
just the same

holding hands
at every fall
sarcasm, cheating
they laugh it off

gradually life happens
every defeat bitter
bruises on the ego
now linger

love an endless wait
at a lonely corner

fangs & footholds
Snakes & Ladders

Self-portrait

The reluctance of touching
A gossamer dream
Which could shatter
With a careless caress
Or a thoughtless word

The pain of knowing
Momentariness
Fragility and  inadequacy
Of that rainbow bubble
Called love

Edge of the sword
Waking the thin line
Between now or never
Only now,never again
Acrobatics known as heartbeats

Love is soul's
Self-portrait
Or nothing !

Life Oxymora

Familiar strangers
Distant intimacies
Cold fires
Dark Light

Lost hopes
Living dead
Open cages
True lies

Fragile strength
Healed hurt
Sad smiles
Momentary forever

Square Circumference
Cruel Kindness
Life oxymora !

ZENTANGLE

Somewhere an earthquake
has rocked the earth
somewhere a volcano sizzles
surfaces and masks
deceptive always

As the core liquifies
and keeps simmering
the pretense of calm
to befool the world

trapped in a Zentangle
you try to exhibit
your talent and greatness
and I barely hold my pencil right

you write peace, composure
celebration
I draw confusion, conflict,pain

feeling "Toska"
trapped in a Zentangle
called Love
called Life

LET IT GO

The alarm clocks have died
the mobile rings
the world is fogged out
objects have blurred
into each other

a lone sandal
abandoned near a drain
some things are useful
only in pairs

thick tiles stolen
off a pavement
arranged like some
ancient Shamanic ritual
the flower-seller
is dreaming of
a warmth called home
shivering in a thin quilt

an abandoned house
like an enlightened mind
leaves all its windows open
waiting for some dreams

TVs and remotes
people-remotely connected
word play
who plays with whom?

pour,scrub,chant
chop,grate,grind,chant
alrms,alarms,alarms
microwave
washing machine
eat,drink,type
like,comment,tweet
read,write,mark
BREATHE
mechanical motions

cohesion and coherence
go first
comprehension is
not a virtue

little fights and victories
red bicycle,Joyce
crayons,Hugh Prather
words,conversations
monosyllables

hug yourself
I tell a friend

to let go
of letting go

the last dimension

Circle

A friend reminiscences about her grandfather
And the memories are the same
That my daughter has of my late father
Piggy banks, secret treats, stories of once upon a time

Time the smooth operator
Parents become grandparents and memory
Friends, siblings, cousins
Now all aunties and uncles, mom and dads

we lose people to death and to life
and we gain a few along the same ride

Age keeps ticking like a silent clock
We are all in a circle

Called life.

Living & Dead

Each person can save eight lives by organ donation
There is no count of lives we don't save
Due to lack of meaningful conversations

A neighbour mourns her dog
She had brought her up for twelve years
Ultimately life is the price we pay
For everything we fear to lose

The  collar still hangs on her gate
And the hollow in her soul

Humans- same mud
Capable of so much love
And such immense indifference

Mind is a battleground
And a graveyard
Of buried happy dreams
And meaningless mazes of consciousness
I am here and not here
I may live and yet not live another day

I may die someday and be already dead.

Life Lessons - My #AtoZChallenge 2016

This is my second time on #atozchallenge . Last year almost three weeks before the challenge my father passed away and so the challenge became my tribute to him.

The psychological truism that bad is stronger than good has come back to me more strongly than ever in this last one year.

This year my theme is LIFE LESSONS.

I think its time to chronicle whatever I have learned in the master class of life.
Hope my suffering becomes my strength and my joys also come with valuable lessons.

A day in my magical life

the smog sits heavy
like the carcass of
a dead relationship

in the rhythmic jostling of
a cycle rickshaw
lies the irony
of the ego spins
we derive
from the race
for being the superlative

the sedatives are strong
they blur memory
and sensation
but pain can't be extracted
like a rotten tooth

my fingers itch
my eyes twitch
looking for the next object
to scrub
while my mind fiddles
why ? why?

my late father's voice
reading out aloud
the laws of insulation

I know he is dead
I know the word "hallucination"

I close my eyes
and I jump off the cliff of self
into me

now I scrub
my soul's lamp
waiting for
some real magic.

Blessing of a Human Question Bank

My little girl is the perfect extrovert revenge by life on both her introvert parents. Apart from her apparent love for reading, story-telling   and being a quiet child happy with herself, she is a people's person to the core.

So we were not surprised when even at such a  young age she had an extremely warm and friendly relationship with everyone in the family and extended family that she met.

A particular trait that stood out was her incessant tirade of queries and questions about everything. So much so that I often call her my human question bank.

She shares little anecdotes about her and make the keep asking the other person to share theirs. She has dozens of supplementary questions for every query that she has, and to top it all the perseverance to be a patient listener of tales.

One of the people she formed a special bond with is with my father. He was 74 when she was born and by the time she had started having meaningful conversations his health had taken a dip, resulting in frequent irritability and some age-related bedimming of memory.

But he was the most peaceful when he was with her. She would put him at ease and they spent hours huddled in a blanket sharing anecdotes about friends and incidents. Some of his stories  going long back to a pre-partition childhood in now Pakistan.

Three months after she turned six he passed away. She was my pillar of strength and as I was trying to come to terms with this new life without him ,I was surprised, how she knew details about his childhood that even I didn't- like his first bicycle was red, his younger brother had bitten his ear bad enough for a couple of stitches just to snatch a few mangoes, the boy who taught him to swim in the Jhelum was a Sikh.

Three of my four grandparents were alive for many more years than her brief six years with her Nana and still I don't know as much about their childhood, their memories with their siblings and the like.

I am glad my  aaj-kal-ka-baccha had the time and the patience for all those questions to him. I am glad she was so involved in my father's last years and that she has created so many fond memories with him.

So while most of the world complains about #AajKalKeBacche , I call mine my personal little Buddha, who is an amazing teacher and co-learner in this master class called life.

Monsoon

Like a dark cloud
heavy and brooding
wanting to pour out
forced to move on

life is monsoon.
