USEFUL UNSOLICITED ADVICE 101

Image result for useful advice"

- Language is one of the most potent tools that the human race has. Use it judicially. Sometimes in dissidence, we tend to use the same language that the oppression has, for instance, sexist language in feminist protests or casteist/communal language in social protests.

- Practice as you preach. Those of us who have had the privilege of education and awareness must use our misery/discrimination if any to raise awareness. If you hide it under the garb of "happy pictures" you are feeding the monster called patriarchy.

-Stop fake news and information. Before you press that forward/share button introspect, ALWAYS INDICATE SOURCE.

-Understand terminology. Mental health terms must not be used to describe criminal behavior. Poverty or discrimination must not be glorified in even art or poetry.

-Write/speak against the grain responsibly. Argue responsibly. Having ideological differences is alright, using those to demean the other personally never is remember that.

-Do not perpetuate myths/cliches that are discriminatory- look at this misery(Pain pornography), Disability is bravery(Inspiration porn), hashtags like #couplegoals #momisgreat and #happilyeverafter that perpetuate gender stereotypes.

-Respect CONSENT both online and offline. Do not pester people to add you or interact with you. As much as it is your right to approach them once it is their right to say NO or not react at all.

-Don't follow herds, if in a large group be a well-informed crowd.

Ex Excitement (#LifeLessons #SocialMedia) #FlashFiction #AtoZ

Ayaz had four serious relationships before he got engaged to Saina, his university bestie. She was a researcher, completely off social media and spent most nights at the lab.

During one such sleepless night scrolling through old school and college groups he found Aima’s profile- his first girlfriend.

They weren’t in touch; she was in the Gulf now, married. Soon the conversations started. A few months later they met in Mumbai. He hadn’t told her that he was engaged and committed.

She told him her husband Ahmed was having an affair with his college junior some Dr. Saina in Mumbai!

Love as Like (#Lifelessons #SocialMedia #FlashFiction #AtoZ)

Bhavna loved etymology her research was about words and their origins; she now worked with Oxford as a language consultant in Delhi. Often she would see freshers constantly hooked to their phones and reading nothing.

Then she met Navin, 5 years her junior and a new colleague. Sparks flew and the romance swept her over, though it lasted only a few months but they still maintained they were friends.

The day she would click a like on his new DP she meant she missed him; he didn’t even care among the 1009 other likes. Many meanings drowned in a like.

Be not become (#LifeLessons from #SocialMedia) #FlashFiction #AprilA2Z

Disha had a long day at the bank today. March was full of overload.

In an attempt to start on a new series of accounts next morning she had missed her chartered bus and was now on board a crowded DTC bus full of tired office-goers mostly like her.

As soon as she was lucky to grab a ladies’ seat, her phone pinged, Sudhir from the head office. They had been chatting on Whatsapp for a month now.

“So what’s up babe!”

“Tired, driving back to home.”

After a long pause -“J right behind you, last seat in the bus.”

Appearances are Deceptive (#LifeLessons from #SocialMedia) #FlashFiction #AprilA2Z

Sia had “met” Sid on a facebook group for singles, the profile was sketchy, no personal pictures but he explained it was because of his Army job and his rather messy on going divorce.

The Whatsapp picture too was hazy and made him look like easily about 20 years older than her.

They chatted more and more intensely. Finally they met and to Sia’s surprise it was a handsome 40 years old, sober and sensible man, not the sex-obsessed freak oldie she had imagined him to be. The Whatsapp DP was definitely photoshopped. She had passed his test.

Nirvanas in a Red light District

“I'm not a body with a soul, I'm a soul that has a visible part called the body.”

― Paulo CoelhoEleven Minutes

Somewhere in a defamed street
behind the neon lights
 De Wallen- the walls
amidst eyes and bodies
I looked for souls
the wounds of the heart
that we try to patch
with moments
of flesh

Window displays
of bodies
and copulation
fantasy extended
beyond fanatasy
the voyeurs see mirrors

I see myself
clearly as a woman
and suddenly know
that the hands which
will hold me together
and the hands
that will grope
me violently
will often be the same

Life like a
LIVE sex show
pre-paid
no returns guaranteed
pleasure is subjective
Desire is a cigarette burning fast

Right there along with
the rosse buurt
in the Zeedijk
a Buddhist temple

incense & prayer flags
and brief Nirvanas
I felt best
scattered in a
red light district !

Candy Shop

standing outside
life's candy shop
I count my pennies

the shiny price tags
all beyond me
peace, love, success
in their shiny jars

like nasty kids
sticking out their tongues
they silently smirk and
say L-O-S-E-R

I can't surely afford
what I want
and would never want
what my pennies can buy

so I turn around
and throw the pennies
above my head
making a wish

that some other kid
might pick them up
and have her dream
fulfilled !

The do's and don'ts

should and shouldn'ts

- just ignore

-let me handle this

- just dismiss

Since Mahabharata

they have the dice

as if we are mice

blindly following a piper

into a ditch

Dear men

please abstain

I understand

this pounce and save

is an old game

I need no saviour

no patron , no saint

I can take my calls

and wage my wars

keep in your pants

your mansplain* !

*verb
informal
  1. (of a man) explain (something) to someone, typically a woman, in a manner regarded as condescending or patronizing.

LET IT GO

The alarm clocks have died
the mobile rings
the world is fogged out
objects have blurred
into each other

a lone sandal
abandoned near a drain
some things are useful
only in pairs

thick tiles stolen
off a pavement
arranged like some
ancient Shamanic ritual
the flower-seller
is dreaming of
a warmth called home
shivering in a thin quilt

an abandoned house
like an enlightened mind
leaves all its windows open
waiting for some dreams

TVs and remotes
people-remotely connected
word play
who plays with whom?

pour,scrub,chant
chop,grate,grind,chant
alrms,alarms,alarms
microwave
washing machine
eat,drink,type
like,comment,tweet
read,write,mark
BREATHE
mechanical motions

cohesion and coherence
go first
comprehension is
not a virtue

little fights and victories
red bicycle,Joyce
crayons,Hugh Prather
words,conversations
monosyllables

hug yourself
I tell a friend

to let go
of letting go

Nothing is Forever

Tashi Chodron was a symbol of peaceful resistance, women’s empowerment and brilliant literature from conflict.

She was born in McLeodganj, her parents had moved there from Tibet a few years ago. Her father started a school and provided her and her siblings good education and a comfortable life. As soon as she was in high school, proposals for marriage came pouring in and like all traditional parents the best prospect was soon arranged for her.

The first few months were stuff that dreams were made of. He was an upcoming writer, traveled a lot, was used to fans and publicity, but soon she realized he was also used to something else - violence. It was the kind of vicious violence that happened in the closed confines of bedrooms. The scars of which are too personal to reveal and too hurtful to ignore.

Still she carried on for three long years because “abandoned” women were not honorable in their culture. It was another “episode” as he would call them later, when he pushed her so forcefully against the wooden railing that she knew he had killed their third baby instantly. She walked out, blood running down her cotton trousers, straight to the police station.

Four days later as she lay in the hospital, she saw her mother sitting by her bedside. She knew the same rehearsed lines would now pour at her about tradition, marriage, and hope. Her father and brothers were waiting for her to gain consciousness so that she could withdraw her complaint and not ‘disgrace ‘the family. She didn’t. Hers became the first case from their community about marital rape and violence in Himachal Pradesh High Court.

The most expensive case for her, it took away everything- her home, her marriage, her social status and most importantly her family. She was disowned and all ties were severed, so much so that even relatives or former friends looked away when they saw her somewhere in the town.

Tashi took refuge in books. She read Buddhist literature and every book she could lay her hands on. In the next three years she survived on charity by tourists and odd jobs but completed her graduation and teacher’s training via correspondence courses.
She stared writing a blog and small assignments for local magazines and newspapers. A year later she was teaching in a monastery’s school and also working with an NGO for women. She now realized she had to let go of her family and unborn children to find a much larger family of distressed like herself.
Today the auditorium was bustling with literature enthusiasts, critics and Buddhist monks. One of their own would be here later for an event for her much-acclaimed poetry book.

Tashi walked onto the podium to read her favorite piece. Her voice faltered a little in the beginning, as she remembered the “no” that she could never say to her father when she was married off young, or the ‘enough’ she should have said to her husband.
She read:

Look out
At the cages
Ties of blood and race
Family and society
And then look in
Towards freedom
Find the peaceful place
That says and repeats
‘Nothing is permanent’
Be your own Buddha.

Amidst applause Tashi saw faces of women from her NGO, her students, and in the last row her ex-husband holding a copy of her book. The dedication of that book read – To Buddha, who said “nothing is forever.”

BE A BEGINNER #AtoZChallenge #LifeLessons

a beginning is free
of the burden of experience

it is an open window
that lets possibilities
flow through it freely

no scepticism
no irony
a clean slate
a potential destiny

Do you remember your first day at school, or college, or work? Can you muster half of the excitement and thrill now that you felt in that first moment of a new beginning?

If birds could write journals and animals could create memoirs , I am sure even for them the first flight, the first hunt, the first leap would be memorable and spectacular.

Over the years we drown ourselves in experience, we wear the know-it-all hat and let go of the possibilities of fresh perspectives that a beginner has, our success makes us stop learning anything new and gradually we become a stubborn deadwood.

Look at the world from a child's perspective and you may find joy again in the changing colours of the sky or just a queue of ants pushing grains of rice home.

Be a beginner doesn't mean let go of your experience and fall in the same dungeons again, it only means imagine your being as a collection of treasure boxes, be ready to open and fill one small new box everyday.

The master class life and the big wide world will always have something at which you can be a beginner and experience its joy in your soul.

BE A BEGINNER !

ACCEPTANCE ALWAYS #LifeLessons #AtoZChallenge

Sometimes it is defeat
in the face of
what we can't change

or giving in
to changes
like hands of a clock
that we
cannot stop

like the gradual opening
of a tightly held fist
into an open palm

We as a culture put a lot of emphasis on "struggle" ,on "resistance" and although it is fair enough to strive harder and struggle for certain ends in life, acceptance of our drawbacks , of some aims that could never be has its own charms, as it brings with itself immense peace.

Over the years these are few big and small things I have accepted as a person, as a woman and as a professional and these make me more at peace with myself:

  • I can never remember all my passwords correctly.
  • I can thrive in reasonable amount of clutter, that's my creative space.
  • I can always prefer tea over coffee, even if coffee is more fashionable.
  • I can never belong to one religion as my faith is as eccentric as my choice of junk jewellery.
  • I can never overcome some medical conditions, only take better care of myself.
  • I will always fail sometimes as a daughter, spouse, parent, friend, professional despite my best efforts and good intentions, its okay perfection is not human.
  • I will love my body and my mind with all their flaws and chinks.
  • I was born clumsy so now I smile at the spills.
  • I accept my child with all her quirks and annoying behaviours , so I parent her not to correct her but to assist her accept herself too.
  • Death, heartbreak, pain will come, embrace them with their lessons.
Go ahead make your own list and remember to open that fist.

Life Lessons - My #AtoZChallenge 2016

This is my second time on #atozchallenge . Last year almost three weeks before the challenge my father passed away and so the challenge became my tribute to him.

The psychological truism that bad is stronger than good has come back to me more strongly than ever in this last one year.

This year my theme is LIFE LESSONS.

I think its time to chronicle whatever I have learned in the master class of life.
Hope my suffering becomes my strength and my joys also come with valuable lessons.

Join me and hundreds of other worthy bloggers here at AtoZChallenge2016
